Congratulations 2013 Tween Walkers!

The 3rd Annual "Tween Walk" was another successful event for the FreeWalkers. On Saturday April 20, 2013 an estimated 32 FreeWalkers participated with nearly all making the 12+ miles. The weather was mild but a bit overcast and overall good conditions for the walk As usual there was plenty of sightseeing surprises along the way. The trail has been improved - with more new natural trail along the Middlesex Greenway and less streetside walking. The Edison Monument is undergoing a facelift and its small museum was open for the first time in three years.

NOTE: We are in the process of compiling the particpant survey and gathering photos. You can upload your photos and video to FreeWalkers, org. And we will also post you photos to this website if you send to pkiczek@freewalkers.org

Log for NB2MP10 - 4/16/11 - The Tween Walk

on Wed, 05/04/2011 - 17:27

This “Tween Walk” (because it’s be-“tween” our 2 very different long-distance walks) was advertised as a “different” kind of walk. For one thing, the distance of 12+ miles would be pretty reasonable and most felt comfortable that they would be making the entire distance. What also made this walk unique was that this urban walk would be mostly along busy streets with an objective to catch some interesting sights along the way. Sights that you would not expect and most Jerseyans don’t even know about.

The area the walk covered is a hidden part of an important busy corridor in the Northeast, connecting major rail lines and highways, and as we learned last week during the Great Canal Walk, waterways too. The East Coast Greenway trail follows the direction of the Raritan River here, but is about 1 to 2 miles north of its shore so it’s not visible for most of the walk. Once crossing it from New Brunswick it heads out to the Raritan Bay, which connects with New York’s harbors and the ocean.

Driving through this area, there is little sign of history or significance in these largely blue collar towns. But our walk proved that this area and its inhabitants had an old historical connection and contributed greatly to New Jersey and our country over the years.

Walking to a deeper appreciation of NJ open spaces

From THE STATE WE'RE IN by Michele S. Byers, Executive Director, NJ Conservation Foundation, March 4, 2011

Land is its own best advocate. Few indeed are those who can walk through the Garden State's spectacular natural areas and not want to see more land saved. This spring, let the land speak to you: Join the Cross-Jersey Walking Challenge!

The Cross-Jersey Walking Challenge invites people to walk 100 miles across the state - from Trenton to New York City. The idea springs from a partnership between the FreeWalkers (www.freewalkers.org), a long distance walking group, and the East Coast Greenway Alliance (www.greenway.org).

Accept the Challenge and you can join any - or all - of three group walks along different sections of the trail, or complete the 100 miles at your own pace and schedule. Each section of the Cross-Jersey Challenge has its own website, complete with routes, maps, descriptions and frequently asked questions.
